SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – To combat the harmful effects of red tide, Manatee County has introduced a new tool called the Weedoo. Resembling an aquatic forklift, this vehicle is designed to collect dead seaweed, fish, and debris in the water, thereby reducing pollution.
The County invested over $150,000 to purchase two Weedoo boats and aims to maximize their use.
While the Weedoo won’t completely eradicate red tide, the Manatee County parks operation manager sees it as a proactive step towards addressing the issue. Red tide, an overgrowth of algae in the water, has previously caused significant harm to marine life and caused unpleasant odors. The County hopes that the Weedoo will be an effective initial measure in preventing the red tide from worsening.
